HERSHEY THINKS AMERICA'S SWEET TOOTH ISN'T GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON. It’s not just about candy anymore. Hershey has been expanding its product portfolio to reflect consumer trends toward healthier snacking that new commitment. But don’t let the low-calorie snacks fool you: Hershey CEO Michele Buck says that despite emerging consumer trends (in the past year, studies have indicated that younger consumers are more concerned with eating healthful products than older generations were), she doesn’t think America’s sweet tooth is going away anytime soon. On September 27 at the Wall Street Journal Global Food Forum, alongside other influential leaders in the food sector, Buck explained that Hershey has been aiming for “more balance” between the company’s iconic candy brands and healthier options. But she’s not particularly worried about Hershey’s original products — chocolate and candy — becoming irrelevant due to changing consumer demands. Consumers don't always do what they say they are going to do, she said during the forum, predicting that they might talk “a big game” about completely changing their eating habits, but that might not accurately reflect sales or actual consumer trends. Buck also warned against iconic brands changing their long-beloved products to fit current trends. From removing artificial preservatives and colors, to adding the non-GMO label to their products, companies like don't want it to change, she said. Despite her confidence in the popularity and reach of Hershey’s candy, Buck hinted in April that the company would be downsizing the “many size variations and seasonal as*ortments of candy it makes for specific retailers.” This is not to say that Hershey has not been introducing new chocolate and candy products. Hershey announced its lineup of limited-edition Halloween-themed candies in August for the upcoming holiday season, including more dark chocolate candy bar options and glow-in-the-dark Hershey bars, Reese’s peanut bu*ter cups and Kit Kats (don’t worry, it’s the wrappers that glow in the dark, not the chocolate).
